In-situ Conservation of Brava’s Endangered Endemic Species
Context: The island of Brava hosts one of the most diverse vegetations in Cabo Verde, with the highest overall plant species richness and a high rate of endemism. However, 78% of these species are threatened due to increasing pressures from overgrazing, invasive species, and climate change. Protecting these unique plants in their natural habitats is essential for preserving Brava’s biodiversity and maintaining the ecological functions that support local communities and landscapes.
These species face significant pressures from uncontrolled grazing, land-use changes, and invasive plants, making targeted in-situ conservation efforts urgent and vital.
Objectives
- Protect and restore critical habitats for Brava’s endangered endemic plants.
- Reduce anthropogenic pressures such as free grazing and invasive species.
- Monitor priority species populations to guide adaptive management.
- Build local capacity for plant conservation through training and community involvement.
- Integrate plant conservation with sustainable rural development practices.
Expected Impact
- Stabilization and growth of endangered endemic plant populations.
- Restoration of key habitats and improved ecological connectivity.
- Reduced threats from human activities and invasive species.
- Increased local awareness and participation in conservation.
- Integration of biodiversity conservation with sustainable agricultural and land-use practices.
Results
- Establishment of protected plots and management zones for priority species.
- Implementation of measures to control free grazing and reduce invasive species impacts.
- Development of monitoring protocols for long-term population assessment.
- Community workshops and educational activities to strengthen local stewardship.
- Knowledge exchange with national and international partners to optimize conservation strategies.
- Integration of cloud-moisture harvesting to support habitat restoration and provide water resources for nearby sustainable grazing initiatives.
